DIY Umrah from Canada: Complete Guide for Canadians

Alhamdulillah, after years of watching Makkah and Madinah vlogs, I finally had the blessing to perform Umrah twice this year! My husband and I planned the entire trip ourselves, without a travel agent, in just under three weeks.

If you’re a Canadian (or traveling from the US or UK) and want to do a DIY Umrah for 2025, this guide will show you step-by-step how to arrange everything independently — from visas to flights, hotels, permits, and transport.

Step 1: Apply for the Saudi e-Visa

To perform Umrah independently, the first step is to get your Saudi e-Visa.

Details:

• Cost: 804 SAR for 2 people (~$321.65 CAD)

• Multiple-entry visa

• Valid for 1 year

Tip: For your visa photo, you can use this online service: Visa Photo $10

Step 2: Get Your Nusuk Umrah Permit 

Once your e-Visa is approved, download the Nusuk App. This app is essential for:

• Booking your Umrah permit

• Reserving the Rawdah permit in Madinah

• Checking prayer availability at Masjid al Haram

Tip: Make sure your Nusuk account is linked to your passport and e-Visa information.

Step 3: Required Vaccinations for Umrah

Before traveling for Umrah, it’s important to meet Saudi Arabia’s health requirements.

Mandatory for all travelers: Meningococcal ACWY vaccine – a valid vaccination certificate is required for entry.

Required for travelers from certain countries:

• Yellow fever vaccine

• Polio vaccine

Step 4: Book Your Flights

Use Google Flights or similar search engines to compare prices and set alerts.

Tip: Consider a stopover for long flights — we usually fly Qatar Airways with a stop in Doha for comfort and to break up the journey.

Step 5: Book Hotels in Makkah & Madinah

Staying close to the Haram and Masjid Nabawi is key for a smooth Umrah experience. Some recommended hotels for DIY travelers:

Tip: Choose hotels that allow direct walking access to Haram to save time and avoid traffic.

Step 6: Transportation Between Makkah & Madinah
